Between-host Evolution of Mutation-rate and Within-host Evolution of Virulence

چکیده

It has been recently realized that parasite virulence (the harm caused by parasites to their hosts) can be an adap-tive trait. Selection for a particular level of virulence can happen either at at the level of between-host tradeoos or as a result of shortsighted within-host competition. This paper describes some simulations which study the eeect that mod-iier genes for changes in mutation rate have on suppressing this shortsighted development of virulence, and investigates the interaction between this and a simpliied model of immune clearance.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the causative agent in development of gastroduode-nal diseases, such as chronic atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcers, mucosa associated lym-phoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and gastric cancer. H. pylori has been associated with inflammation in cardia, showing the fact that infection with this bacterium could also be a risk factor for gastric cardia cancer. Gastric c...

Vaccination, within-host dynamics, and virulence evolution.

We explore the potential consequences of vaccination on parasite epidemiology and evolution. Our model combines a microscopic (within-host dynamics) and a macroscopic (epidemiological dynamics) description of the interaction between the parasite and its host. This approach allows relevant epidemiological traits such as parasite transmission, parasite virulence, and host recovery to emerge from ...

Frank , S . A . 1992 . A kin selection model for the evolution

SUMMARY The costs and benefits of parasite virulence are analyzed in an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS) model. Increased host mortality caused by disease (virulence) reduces a parasite's fitness by damaging its food supply. The fitness costs of high virulence may be offset by the benefits of increased transmission or ability to withstand the host's defenses. It has been suggested that mult...

Within-host population dynamics and the evolution of microparasites in a heterogeneous host population.

Why do parasites harm their hosts? The general understanding is that if the transmission rate and virulence of a parasite are linked, then the parasite must harm its host to maximize its transmission. The exact nature of such trade-offs remains largely unclear, but for vertebrate hosts it probably involves interactions between a microparasite and the host immune system. Previous results have su...

Virulence evolution of a generalist plant virus in a heterogeneous host system

Modelling virulence evolution of multihost parasites in heterogeneous host systems requires knowledge of the parasite biology over its various hosts. We modelled the evolution of virulence of a generalist plant virus, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) over two hosts, in which CMV genotypes differ for within-host multiplication and virulence. According to knowledge on CMV biology over different hosts,...
